Apples

I had a three day week!  Gotta love fall break!!!!  So… this was the perfect time to wrap up our apple unit.  Here are a few random snapshots of our week…
Last week we learned about tall tales and made this cute little Johnny Appleseed… So on Monday we reviewed the elements of a tall tale.
We also reviewed the importance of various text features.

We read Amelia Bedelia’s First Apple Pie and Apples by Gail Gibbons and used our interactive notebooks to compare fiction and nonfiction.  Of course, I forgot to take pictures…
We have be working a TON on writing and identifying sentences.  This week we reviewed the naming and telling parts of a sentence.  My kiddos came up with sentences and different students circled and underlined the naming/telling parts.  You just have to ignore the sloppy anchor chart!  Gotta keep it real!!!

My students wrote sentences identifying the naming/telling parts.  We will definitely be working on varying our sentences next week as we begin learning about bats!
We used our interactive notebooks to sort statements and questions… {As you can see, I’m all about cutting up some paper in my classroom! We always do a ton of different sorts… It’s much better than always writing!}
In math we have been working on patterns. So… we had to make some Apple Jacks patterns.
We sorted patterns…
We’ve also had some fun with our apple math problems… I love anything that requires my students to understand a problem, create a way to solve a problem, and explain their thinking.
And, of course we had to end our week by making applesauce.  I’m not going to lie… it was a hot mess. First of all, I forgot to turn the crock pot on high.  So after a few hours, the apples were still hard {but smelled delicious}.
I knew the applesauce would NOT be done by the end of the day so I had to think quick.  Thank goodness I keep a skillet at school!  I transferred the apples over and they were done right away!  I definitely need to remember this for next year!!! A skillet it will be!!!!

Are applesauce was a little chunky, but definitely delicious.  Oh yes, I always make biscuits to go with the applesauce.  No oven, so I made them flat like pancakes!  The kids loved it!  Flat biscuits and chunky applesauce!!!!

After the craziness with the applesauce I stopped taking pictures… but we also completed these fun writing activities…

And that was about it for my three days of school….
Next week… BATS!!!!
You can find all of the apple activities and printables HERE.
Have a great weekend!!!!!
