Worms and NOUNS

by Hollie Griffith

on September 8, 2018

Well…. We’ve made it through 16 FULL days of first grade! My students have learned the rules and procedures. I’ve completed A LOT of assessments and I’m really getting to know my students. I’m positive that it’s going to be a GREAT year! It’s also pretty awesome that Addie is right across the hall! Being at school with my girls is definitely a perk!

We’ve had a lot of fun learning about worms! I think worms is the perfect unit to get kids excited about school! They get to observe, explore, talk with one another, and I get a first look at their writing skills. Here’s a few highlights….

You can find EVERYTHING worms… in my Wonderful Worms Unit.

We’ve also had fun learning about common nouns.

We sang some fun songs and created an anchor chart. I really STINK at drawing pictures… so lately, I’ve been adding black and white clipart. My students LOVE coloring the pictures throughout the week. I also think it’s really important to create anchor charts WITH my students. I just believe that it makes their learning more meaningful. AND, I like how they will refer back to them throughout the coming months.

We used the anchor chart to practice writing sentences.

We completed our FIRST interactive notebook entry

Then, we played a silly sentence match up game. Every child got a noun card. They had to go around the classroom to find two friends to join their group. Each group had to have a person, place, and thing. Once my kids got in groups, they worked together to make a silly sentence.

AND… their favorite… Noun Scoot. I basically tape task cards around the classroom in no particular order. My students move around the room, answer the questions, and write their answers on their recording sheets. At this point in the year, not all of my students are reading fluently. BUT…. about half of them are. I love how they read to each other and help each other out.
