Kevin Henkes Author Study {Chrysanthemum}

Today was the beginning of our Kevin Henkes author study.  Of course… We had to start off with Chrysanthemum! Chrysanthemum is the perfect story for the beginning of the year! We aren’t into a normal schedule just yet and I decided to have a fun “Chrysanthemum” filled day!

We started off the day by reviewing our “What do good readers do?” anchor chart.  Today we discussed the importance of staying focused.  In my class we call it “being in the zone.” I explain that just as they are “in the zone” when playing baseball, gymnastics, football, etc. They must also be “in the zone” when reading so that they can comprehend and make meaning.

And then it was time to read!
We had fun completing this cute little name worksheet.  We had a good discussion about vowels and consonants. We also made a cute class name graph on bulletin board paper. {I forgot to take a picture and will have to post it tomorrow.}
We also completed this cute chrysanthemum craft and writing activity.  They made a picture of themselves in a chrysanthemum and wrote about what makes them wilt & bloom.  This is included in my Kevin Henkes Author Study but you can also find this cute little craft here as a FREEBIE,
We had fun sorting syllables with partners…
We also had fun writing our names…
This afternoon we had to finish up our classroom promise!  If you have never done a classroom promise I encourage you to do so!  My kids love it! After making our promise I always have the kids sign the bottom. I LOVE seeing the cute little faces they create.  Some of my students used the face and hair patterns from my Lip Smackin’ Lemon-tastic Descriptive Writing Unit.  You can find it here if you need patterns {You will also get a FUN writing/science lesson for later}. About half of my class wanted patterns… I always let them decide!
Tomorrow we will be getting on a normal schedule.  I am going to try REALLY HARD to post my ELA plans/activities as we explore Kevin Henkes books and learn to apply reading skills & strategies.  Tomorrow we will be focusing on creating mental images! You can find all of my Chrysanthemum and  Kevin Henkes activities here. I’m off to bed!  I just can’t get used to waking up so early
